Snoring & Sleep Apnea
Treatment for Sleep Apnea and Snoring in Winnipeg
Is your partner tired of your snoring? Do you wish you could get better sleep? We bet you didn’t know a dentist could help with snoring. Polo Park Dental Centre is different from other dentists because we offer treatment for snoring for Winnipeg residents and for others living in the surrounding areas.
What Is Sleep Apnea?
Having sleep apnea means that regular breathing is interrupted during sleep—that’s why many people snore. This could be due to soft tissue located at the back of the throat collapsing during sleep, or it could be the brain failing to signal the muscles to breathe properly. Sleep apnea can cause headaches, difficulty sleeping, and tiredness during the daytime. It is also associated with increased risk of hypertension, stroke, and heart failure if left untreated.
While some cases of sleep apnea can be treated through a change in lifestyle or sleeping habits, more severe forms require breathing machines, dental appliances, or surgery. At Polo Park Dental Centre, we provide the non-invasive form of treatment: dental appliances.
Dental Appliances
A MAD (Mandibular Advancement Device) is worn nightly during sleep to keep the jaw in a forward position. This maintains open airwaves. The device looks similar to a mouth guard worn during sports. This type of treatment is a great alternative to the CPAP (continuous positive air pressure) machine treatment because it is less cumbersome and more comfortable to wear.
