At one point or another, most of us have experienced dental pain. Perhaps your child fell and broke a tooth, or you woke up one morning with an excruciating toothache. How do you know if you need to see your Winnipeg emergency dentist now?

At Polo Park Dental Centre, our capable team of dentists knows how important it is to receive prompt treatment for any oral care emergency. That’s a big reason why we’re available on Saturdays and evenings in addition to normal hours. For urgent care after hours, use our emergency number below.

What Constitutes a Dental Emergency?

Dental emergencies generally fall into two categories. Know the signs of oral emergencies so you’ll understand when to call and when to wait.

Severe, unrelenting tooth pain. If pain seems to come from deep within the tooth or gums and doesn’t go away, you may have a developing infection. If not attended to, the infection may become an abscess. Tooth pain of this type may signal a dying nerve and require RCT (root canal therapy). In some cases, the dentist may order a prescription pain reliever to control the pain until appointment time.

However, if your tooth pain comes and goes, is not severe, or is relieved by acetaminophen or ibuprofen, your symptoms probably don’t warrant a dental emergency. Please call during regular office hours to make an appointment.

Tooth trauma. If an accident causes tooth loss, impaction, or breakage, contact us immediately. Particularly if a tooth is knocked out altogether, timing is critical if we are to save the tooth. In the case of tooth fractures, collect broken fragments to bring with you to your appointment.

Not all tooth trauma requires invasive procedures or surgeries. When you contact us, describe the situation in detail so that we can advise you about the next steps to take.

Keep in mind that we may suggest temporary pain relief methods to help control or eliminate your pain before you visit us. If in doubt, please call. We will take care of your issue and eliminate your worry along with any fear or pain you may feel.
